Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club was founded in 1932 as a sailing club by a small group of sailboat enthusiasts, CBYC has grown steadily over the years in terms of its membership, facilities, and the scope of activities offered.
Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club is at the southwestern end of Los Angeles. Tucked away on the lee (warm side) of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and overlooking LA Harbor, the CBYC clubhouse and marina are situated in the most pleasant micro-climate in the area. This unique location provides the finest (and shortest) sail to Catalina Island Coves and the absolute best all-around sailing and power boating on the West Coast. The winds found in "Hurricane Gulch" provide excellent conditions for sailors of all types of boats, from sabots to sleds.
Please note that this is all unofficial. Anything written here is superceeded by at least three things. 1) The NOR, 2) the SIs, and 3) anything posted on the official notice board.
With that, a few comments:
A) The sailing area is in the lee of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. This area has two interesting features. First, it is warmer than the other side. Second, the breeze is stronger as it bends around the land formation.
B) Typically, the wind will setup the same way each day in the summertime. Westerly. Count on breeze in the mid-teens, with the possibility of more on either course.
Water depths in the course area will be 75-100 feet, so anchoring (and setting marks) will be difficult. Typical seas range from 2 to 4 feet. The course is at least 45 minutes from the dock, please plan accordingly.
Water depths in the course area will be 15 feet. The course is in protected water, behind the federal breakwall. Wind speed can be deceiving here because of the breakwater. Some say it is windier here than outside.
